The Federation of Small Businesses recommends the following 6 steps to creating a modern, digital, adaptable small business.  We would argue that it should be for any size business.

  1. Define a strategy
  2. Create a culture for change
  3. Provide strong and original content that can be accessed across all platforms
  4. Manage interaction on online channels including social media
  5. Understand Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising
  6. Monitor Online data to gauge success of any strategy

We would add:-

1.    Define a strategy

Always write a Brief defining your strategy READ MORE

2.    Create a culture for change

Businesses develop and competition changes as does Google. Creating a culture for change means you can keep abreast of competition and change and develop your website.   Nothing is cast in stone.

3.  Provide strong and original content that can be accessed across all platforms

A website launched a decade or so ago in a time when most people accessed websites from PC's will need to have been adapted to be accessed across mobile devices.  Websites need to change as Google search engines change with the advert of new algorithms - for example duplicate content rewritten needs to be of high quality adding value to the website to ensure its high ranking position.

www.SurveyQuotes.co.uk is a website we have built, re-worked and re-worked again to improve its search engine rankings

4.  Manage interaction on online channels including social media

Also you have to make sure that it is cost effective too as it would be pointless spending hours on social media without any return!

Take a look at www.SurveyorReview.co.uk a website designed by us to test and measure if people are interacting with social media and website forums talking about Surveyors and what they are saying

5.  Understand Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising

Google AdWords, BING AdWords - we recommend you visit your AdWord campaigns a minimum of once a week to monitor, test and measure their results

6.  Monitor Online data to gauge success of any strategy

We call this Testing and Measuring - finding out what works and what does not work on a regular basis - what works well one week may not work another week Google is forever changing and so your website will need to change and adapt too.

If you wanted to find out how your website was performing, who your unique visitors were, which pages were popular etc then the Dublin based company StatCounter, the web analytics service, used to be able to supply this information.  However, as times changed and Google become more dominant the information that StatCounter could once give their clients was limited by Google only being available via Google Analytics.

Google is one of the most valuable companies in the world and prides itself as knowing as much as possible about the online behaviour of its users.  You too will need to keep up-to-date with your online customers - we can help you do this call us on free phone 0800 904 7999 to find out more
